When to Come

ReelFlyFishing.com -- Guides with ClientThe Bow River is fished year round, as long as the temps are above freezing. We have a short spring drifting season from mid april to late may before the spring mountain run-off hits. During this time we concentrate on Brown Trout as the Rainbows have ran up the tribs to spawn. Good streamer fishing right in the city as the water is still a bit off-coloured.

By July 1st the runoff will start subsiding and the rainbows will have returned. Once we get a good foot of visibility it will be time to start pounding the banks with big streamers. As the water clears we will focus more on nymphing and scouting out the PMD hatch.

As the heat of summer hits us the evening caddis hatch will be in full swing, time to hunt for snouts. In August the grasshoppers become more active and the name of the game is hopper/dropper fishing.

In September we get the final good hatch the Blue Wing Olives, hunting big spooky trout in thin water is tough but rewarding.

Depending when winter hits we can drift right into November, but be prepared with a winter coat, gloves and a touque when fishing this late in the year.
